boring contentWe firmly believe - there is no such thing as a boring industry, and content is only as dull as you make it.  You don’t have to be a coveted lifestyle brand, the latest shiny new tech toy or a hot spot destination in order to create interesting, original, and dare we  say… fun content!

And by boring, we certainly don’t mean it as an insult. But, being completely honest, most “behind the scenes” types of businesses and services that traditionally label themselves as “B2B” are not usually considered the most glamorous industries. Why? Because they usually make themselves sound that way. 

The top content offenses

While it’s starting to change, most service-oriented, heavily regulated or manufacturing businesses still focus on themselves and  the facts – creating content with lists of numbers, stats and figures. They’re also usually offenders of our number one content offense: jargon. That’s right!  Business-speak, or Tech-lish as we like to call it, is rampant in the business-to-business space.  What do I mean?  Phrases like ROI, leveraging optimal performance, core competency, best practice, vertical, ecosystem, solution, scalable, and the original, most-over-used phrase of all time: out of the box.  They mean nothing, and everyone is tired of hearing them.

Be a change agent

It’s ok. if you’re one of these offenders. Really it is. You know why? You have the most opportunity to change! Actually, creating original and interesting content is still relatively new to many businesses, and likely, if you’re in one of these spaces, your competitors have been slow to adapt. So you have the greatest chance to stand out by talking to your audience the way few others in your industry do… as people! 

Person to person

Person-to-person, human to human, mano y mano… whatever you want to call it, the idea is to create content that truly helps, informs and educates to make someone’s life or job easier, right?  Who are you in business for?  Who are your products and services for?  And… why should they choose you?  If you make an audience strategy your primary marketing strategy, you will start making a shift from all about you to all about them.
